An annual technology event that attracts over 150,000 visitors, CES 2018 is heading to Las Vegas for its 2018 incarnation. Taking place from January 9th to January 12th, the expo is spread over a number of venues in Nevada’s adult playground; Tech East, which unfold in the Las Vegas Convention and World Trade Center as well as the Renaissance and Westgate hotels, Tech West, which will be hosted by The Palazzo, The Wynn, The Venetian and Sands Expo, and finally Tech South, at ARIA, Vdara and Cosmopolitan.
Tech East will specialise in developments in the entertainment industry, such as drones, audio, gaming, augmented and virtual reality, photography and much, much more. Tech West is all about emerging technology, particularly in the fields of health, fitness and wearables. Tech South is focused on advertising, content marketing, entertainment communities, displays, and also hosts any number of keynote speakers, conferencing and networking opportunities.
Far more than just a dry exercise in backslapping for tech professionals, CES is packed with fascinating entertainment as well as innovative demonstrations. Television network TNT will be present, hosting a live episode of Inside the NBA; Stuff magazine will be doling out the Wearable Tech Awards; a number of celebrity chefs will be feeding the attendees from food trucks, compliments of IBM; and Barnes and Noble will present Gary’s Book Club, an insight into the unmissable tomes that have been penned from within the technology industry.
Still not filling your hard drive? Then maybe the keynote speakers, representing such companies as Huawei, Nissan, NBC and Under Armour will. Failing that, simply browse the presentations and exhibits from the vast range of tech giants that will be parading their latest wares. Sony, LG, Panasonic, Sennheiser, JVC, Microsoft… just about every major electrical retailer will be in attendance, tempting you to ooh and aah at the advances in their television sets, smartphones, watches, cameras and computer technology. With 4K Ultra HD and QLED the latest tech advances in entertainment, expect larger, lighter and thinner televisions and set-top boxes to dazzle audiences in a continuing drive to terminate reliance on physical media such as Blu-ray discs for crystal clarity in the home viewing experience.
Like your gadgets?
It’s gadget fans that will primarily be at their element at CES. With wireless technology and virtual reality becoming increasingly prevalent, as well as the standard practice of making every possible labour saving device small enough to fit into the palm of a child’s hand, countless advances in adult toys will be announced. Voice activated virtual assistants such as Amazon’s Echo will also be a prominent feature of CES 2018, with the online giant’s new Alexa expected to steal the show. It’s not all about consumer capers though, as CES will also showcase developments in mobility aids for anyone physically or sensory impaired.
CES is a must-attend for tech-heads of all varieties. Whether you work at one of the major companies listed above, a smaller alternative that’s looking to steal a march on the big boys, act as a freelancer or journalist that needs to stay ahead of the game when it comes to developments in the industry or are just an interested enthusiast of all things wired and otherwise with a spare thousand dollars burning a hole in your pocket, Las Vegas is the place to be seen this January.
